She has a master’s degree in German and Philosophy, and has also trained as a journalist. Hermann worked for a while as a journalist, and made her debut as an author in 2000 with the short story collection Sommerhaus, später (Summerhouse, later). Since then she has published three short story anthologies and two novels.
