Harald Gaski

Harald Gaski (b 1955, Norway) is a Professor of Sámi culture and literature at the Sámi University of Applied Sciences in Kautokeino. 

In 2006, he was the joint recipient of Gollegiella, a biennial prize open to Sami speakers in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. The prize was awarded as a recognition of his great contribution to the preservation and development of the Sami language.

His publications include several books on Sami cultural and literary history, for a wide range of audiences. His academic work includes research on Sami epic poetry and Sami culture in Northern Norway. Especially notable are his interpretations and translations of the Nordic Council Literature Prize-winner Nils-Aslak Valkeapää.

Gaski is also a writer of fiction, and together with Lars Nordström, he has also published a children’s book, Čiežain čáziin, which has later been translated into both Norwegian and Finnish.
